Review: "The Double Victory" by Sabra Waldfogel
This is the third book in Sabra Waldfogel’s trilogy involving Bess, Azulee, and Viola. It continues the story where Hasting Street Blues ends. World War II is still raging as are the union and racial battles in Detroit.
The first two books were more centered on allowing black men and women to become union members and work in Detroit Aluminum. The hard-fought battle was won, and they hold positions in the cleaning room but that is only the beginning of the struggle. Viola realizes that although qualified, she must struggle for every step forward. Azulee struggles to become a singer who is taken seriously and not only faces racial but sexual harassment and discrimination. Bess and Theo’s relationship is put to the test when Theo is transferred to Adrian, Michigan and is treated unfairly. All three women must fight for what they want and hold dear.
This story is a very fitting end to the Detroit Series. The three women have been through fights involving racial injustice and they have become stronger because of it. This is a three-book series but each book can be read and enjoyed by itself.
