Review: "A Fine Imitation" by Amber Brock

Wow, what a wonderful summer book for the beach!! I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and couldn’t put it down. This story takes place in the 1920s and tells the life story of Vera Bellington, a rich socialite who has it all, the penthouse in a luxury high rise built by her handsome husband, the top of the pecking order in the women’s society and all the money she could possibly want…why then is she just acting happy? Her life is turned upside down when an artist is employed to paint a mural on the walls of the pool in the high rise and he pursues her affections. Unable to resist, she must make a choice between her current life or leaping out in faith and taking the chance to really live.

I loved the author’s writing style! She alternates between the past and the present to allow the reader to see how Vera has become the woman that she currently is. Her mother is the major influence in her life as a young girl and still is. Although she is an adult, her mother influences her to make choices that shape her life. Vera’s character is fully developed and you feel both compassion and anger at the choices that she makes.

I highly recommend this book for young adult to older readers. Although the plot and ending is fairly predictable, there are enough twists to keep you turning pages and you will cheer as Vera finds the life that she desires.

I requested and received this book for review from Blogging for Books.
