Review: "The Edge of Lost" by Kristen McMorris

The Edge of Lost by Kristen McMorris 11/13/15 ****

The description of this book that I read was largely about the prison on Alcatraz Island and an inmate who plans an escape. It was intriguing since I have not read widely on the subject. Although a small portion of the book was dedicated to that portion of the storyline, this novel is so much more! This is the story of Shanley Keagan, a poor orphan born in Dublin, Ireland. His parents pass away at a young age and he is taken in by his uncle who uses him to perform in pubs for the money to survive. His uncle decides to take him to America because he thinks Shanley can make more money there. Just when his luck seems to be turning, his uncle dies on the ship. Through a hastily formed friendship with an Italian family on board the vessel, they take him in and he becomes part of their family. The rest of the novel is the fascinating story of Shanley’s life and how he finds himself in Alcatraz.

I found this book very entertaining. The characters were well defined and you could feel empathy with each one. Because Shanley was faced with many moral dilemmas, the plot was absorbing. His life took many unexpected twists and turns that were unforeseen. Because of this, I was compelled to keep reading to find out how he would solve each quandary.

I ardently recommend this book. It gives a colorful history of life in New York City during the 20’s and 30’s and the immigrants struggle to survive. Shanley’s life is many faceted and will keep you turning pages. The description of life at Alcatraz and his daring escape attempt makes the story all the more complete.
