Review: "Swans of Fifth Avenue" by Melanie Benjamin

Once again Melanie Benjamin delivers a thought provoking historical novel about the dazzling lives of the rich and famous of Manhattan during the 60s and 70s. It centers on the author of In Cold Blood, Truman Capote and his friendship with the “Swans”, Babe Cushing Paley, Slim Keith, Marella Agnelli, Gloria Guinness, Pamela Harriman, and C.Z Guest. It is an intimate look into the loves, betrayals and cattiness that made up their intimate lives.

Because this story is told chronologically, it is easy to follow. The two main characters, Babe and Truman, are well defined. Their histories are both touching and tragic. Background information is provided for both that gives the story depth. The secondary characters are also fleshed out adequately and it makes the story engrossing. The lies and deceptions that were practiced by most of the characters kept the storyline enthralling and exciting. I did not want to put it down.

As in Ms. Benjamin’s previous novel, The Aviator’s Wife, we get a glimpse into the little known and explored lives of characters that are not usually studied. On the outside, their lives seem perfect but in reality, their lives are even more troubling than most. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the history of the coveted personalities in the 60’s and 70s, especially Truman Capotes. You will not be disappointed and will not be able to stop reading.
