Review: "Helen of Sparta" by Amalia Carosella

I have not read a lot of Greek mythology but this book was a great introduction! All I really knew about Helen was that she was so beautiful that men and gods lusted after her on sight. Other than that, not a lot has been written about her leaving her character very one dimensional. Ms. Carosella’s tale attempts to fill in the blanks about Helen as a very young woman leading up to and including her marriage to Theseus. She weaves an intricate account of Helen’s life as the daughter of the god, Zeus and the trials and tribulations that her countenance bring her.

The author knits together a very enjoyable love story. Her story fashions Helen into a believable, stubborn young woman who does not view her beauty as an asset. You feel her pain and suffering caused by man and the gods and cry along with her. You also fall in love with Theseus along with Helen because Ms. Carosella makes his character seem human and credible.

If you don’t know if you would like to read mythology, pick this book up and give it a try. You will devour this story and want to pick up others like it.
