Review: "A Life Apart" by L. Y. Marlow
This book caught my eye because it starts in 1940 during World War II and proceeds through the civil rights era to the present. Since I have been trying to read more about this war period, I immediately picked it and couldn’t wait to get started. Although this was more a love story that touches briefly on historical events, it is brilliant story and warmed my heart.
This is a heartrending story about a forbidden love between a black woman and a white man. Morris Sullivan meets Beatrice through a stoke of fate. As a newlywed, he joins the navy and is stationed in Pearl Harbor during the fateful attack. His life is saved by an anonymous black sailor who is killed performing many heroic deeds. Morris uncovers the sailor’s name and writes a letter to his sister, Beatrice. They meet and both feel a mutual attraction. This starts a lifetime of an intertwining of their lives.
This story follows their lives as they try and deny their attraction and the effects that their deceit have on them and their loved ones. It follows the heartbreaking difficulties that were experienced by both races for their friendship and affair. It is also a story of forgiveness and the freedom and peace that it brings to the heart and soul. I strongly recommend you add this to your reading list, you won’t be disappointed.
I received this book for free from Blogging for Books for this review.
