Review: "Rebel Yell" by S. C. Gwynne

Rebel Yell is a fact filled, non-fictional book of Stonewall Jackson’s life. It is well written in a style that is easy to read. It follows his life from his birth to his death at Chancellorsville.

This is a very complete accounting of Stonewall’s life. It explores the complexities and nuances of this Civil War general who was Lee’s right hand. Some thought him odd, others a genius. You will have to be your own judge. My only criticism about this version is that Stonewall’s mistakes as a general, and he did make some, were glossed over.

This is a wonderful book to learn about Jackson and the Civil War. It reads like a finely composed novel. It is well researched and concise. I have always admired this man, both as a as a general and a person and this story only confirms this admiration.
