Review: "Neverhome" by Laird Hunt

There are documented instances where women actually dressed as men to fight in the Civil War. This book addresses this issue and what a unique and distinctive story this turned out to be. This is the first time I have actually read a fictional account about this and what a tale Laird Hunt has created.

Ash Thompson, as she was known to her fellow soldiers, endures the same life as they do. She fights in numerous battles and endures the same hardships. She keeps her identity hidden by binding herself and making sure she is alone for bathing and in the bushes…then she is in injured and her life takes many unforeseen turns.

Although this story is written by a man and therefore has more of a man’s perspective on how a woman would think, this story is a roller coaster ride of unexpected and surprising twists, from the reasons Ash has joined to fight, to the people and situations she endures in finding her way back to her husband. The completely unexpected ending left me speechless and astonished. Pick this book up, you won’t be disappointed.
