Review: "The Girl Who Came Home - A Novel of the Titanic" by Hazel Gaynor

If you are looking for a terrific book for your summer vacation, look no further!!! This is an engrossing historical fiction novel about the sinking of the Titanic. A young, college journalism major, Grace, discovers that her 87 year old great grandmother, Maggie, is a survivor of the fateful sailing of 1912. Maggie has refused to talk about the tragic trip to her family all her life. Because of unfortunate circumstances that have forced Grace to put her life on hold, Maggie decides to confide in her to help her get her life back in motion.

I enjoyed this book. It is very captivating and fast moving. The author goes back and forth from past to present telling both Maggie and Grace’s story. Her approach, although not unique, was straight forward and easy to follow. I raced through the book wanting to know what happened to Maggie and her sailing companions and how Grace was going to get her life back on track.

Although the sinking of the Titanic is not a light subject, this book was not weighty. It was a different twist on the stories that have come from that night. There was also a surprising and unique turn that brought the story to closure. Pick up this book, stretch out in the sun and enjoy!!!
