Review: "The Giver" by Lois Lower
The Giver is thought provoking and chilling. It is a tale about what life could be like if our free will and emotions were taken away. Everything would be chosen for us, from our mates, to our children and our jobs. Each family unit would consist of a mother and father and two children, a boy and girl. Free will was completely obliterated by punishment and emotions were stifled by medication. When your usefulness to society was done, you were sent to a special home.
I did not care for this book, but not because of the writing style of the author. It held your interest almost in the way a car accident does, you know you shouldn’t look but you can’t stop yourself. I didn’t want to keep reading because the book made me uneasy and I was afraid of the direction it was heading but I had to keep turning pages.
If you like to read books that make you think and are in the market for a disturbing story, The Giver is for you. It will have you turning pages to the end and is a great book to discuss with friends!
